Sort of simple question I suppose.

How do you tell the difference between a Google dance and just a drop in rankings?

I was at rank #38 a few days ago, now it's saying 49, and SerpBook seems to be bouncing between 0 and the actual rank.

Site is still indexed by google. (if I search site:mynichedomain it shows up)

How old is the site? Are you doing any significant link building at the moment?

Did you maybe stop with linking for some time and the Google might be devaluating your links over time?

You will know if is a drop in rankings - is usually due to a penalty or devaluation of links.

Site is about 5 months old, yes I have been doing link building (probably over the past month or so).

Will it stabilize eventually? Or is it going to drive me nuts constantly? (I have to ask as I'm still fairly new to SEO)

Wait for a few days to see if you jump up. If you keep your lower rank or keep plummeting further down, is probably that your links got devalued over time (and not penalized).

It kept dropping, it's not ranked anymore (at least in top 300). Build more links?

1. Check your anchor text, how much percent does it have exact anchor?
2. Go on Google and just type your website URL, click search and see if you come on top.
3. Go on Google, type:
site:www.yoursite.com
Your site should be on top
4. Check your backlinks in MajesticSEO for possible negative SEO.

If everything is ok, than build more links, but now don't do what you did so far because is not working well.
