Via Windows Update is called upgrading and this will preserve all your files.
I got my documents and other files on a diffrent harddrive, But i highly suggest you make a backup of your files just to be sure so if they are deleted you can get them back within seconds.
I upgraded from 8.1 to 10, then did a clean install Smile
If you have any more questions feel free to contact me via here or pm and i will be happy to help you out.

It will give you 3 options, to just upgrade keeping all your files and installed software, to just keep your files, but no installed software and to wipe everything.
But it would be smart if your backed up your important files just in case...

I created a bootable usb and did a clean install that way.
A clean install always removes everything as it formats your Harddrive.
If you want to keep your files do a upgrade, if you want to start fresh to a clean install.
I recommend backing up all important files and doing a clean install anyways, that way you don't bring all the crap you had on your previous operating system.

i just did the upgrading from the windows update control panel menu.

the upgrade was successful no error or anything.
Nothing got deleted even the chrome history and everything went smoothly.

If that works for you then it's good :) I always do a clean install since i don't want to transfer the old crap to my new os (old registery etc etc)
