This really made me laugh, i don't know what kind of niches this so called "guru" is in but i have been doing very good with the ticket niche (concert and sport tickets) and they mostly buy on the first visit, also i have had a lot of local pay per call sites and people will call the business when they really have a need for it, maybe he should target his traffic better of get better (needy) niches.

I personally don't belief in listbuilding, i have done it myself and it never panned out, the reason why that is (i think) is that people use free e-mail accounts that they use for these type of offers and never read your email again, it ends up in the spamfolder of in a mass cleaning of the account. (that is what i do)

There are much better ways to bind and communicate with your prospects if you need to pre-sell them, like facebook and twitter and you don't have to create a free product and s setup tedious series of auto-responders, worry about opening rates and all that crap, just put your message on the social media and you will have the same if not better ROI for your time and money.

I am not saying that email marketing is death, nothing in marketing is death, but most o fthe money is not in the list anymore, it is in social media imho :)
