I have been doing keyword/competition research with market samurai & I wanted to know,
How can you tell that the niche has high competition? Some of the keywords have competition like yahoo, howcast, wikihow, lifescript. Are you able to outrank these sites without spending a lot of $$$.

With my own experience I can say that yes, you can outrank sites that has been there for years, even without purchasing SEO services, but you won't propably hit first position for very long time or ever. As example, just last week one of my 100% whitehat site hit first page for my main keyword, but I dont expect to see it top 3 position ever without proper SEO.

You are talking here about outranking old site, that has been publishing content for years, thats not easy, especially without blackhat SEO tools.

Publishing unique content and perfect on-page SEO will get u there, eventually :)

I'll write a full guide in 1-2 days on this, is a long subject. But regarding those sites, in most cases is not possible to outrank them or is so difficult that is not worth your time or money invested and even if you invest and hit it hard, your chances are still slim. For example take a look at big weight loss keywords, few first pages are dominated by these sites that don't do seo at all and is impossible to outrank them, if you don't believe take a look there is no affiliate site there ranking.
