How To Use Voluum To Track CPA Campaigns – In-Depth Guide

Note: I found this guide after looking at several articles. I find this guide very useful and I thought to share it with elites members.

We all know how important tracking your campaign is when it comes CPA marketing. In the past, there were lots of PHP coding that is required to just pass through certain data.

However, due to the advance technology we have today, you can literally track everything you want by using software or tools.

What You Will Discover
  • Why Voluum tracking tool is a must have tool

  • How to set up your CPA Campaigns

  • How to track all parameters and subIDs

  • How to track conversions within Voluum
Before we get started, please create your Free account with Voluum.
Just click on “Sign Up” and follow the prompts making sure that you choose the noobie package. This is free but is only limited to 100,000 clicks/impressions per month.
Now that you have a Voluum account, let’s explain the important variables that you need to track when doing CPA Marketing.

Understanding Sub-Ids Within CPA Networks
First, you need to understand Sub-ids within CPA Networks

Almost all of them will allow you to add in “SubID” at the end of your affiliate link so you can track where the sales are coming from or whatever you want.Below is an example of what it should look like:
Peerfly Affiliate Link: http://trkur.com/XXXXX/YYYYY?s1=Testing
(here the SubID is Testing)

Understanding Variables From Traffic Source

Second, we need to track “Variables” from different traffic source.

Most traffic sources like Traffic Vance, Bing Adcenter or Plenty Of Fish will have the ability to track specific variables.
These variables could be anything like age, gender, state, keywords, URLs and so on. We collect these variables by using “Place Holders” in our tracking URL where we assign a “Parameter”.

I will explain more on this very soon…

Basically, if you have certain place holders in your URL, you can gather the data and pass them through to your tracking software.

Third Party Tracking Tool – Voluum

Lastly, we have our third party tracking software, Voluum.
Voluum is a server hosted tracking software which means that we’re using their server to host all our data and our traffic.
Our third party tracking software is where all the magic happens.

Walk Through On How To Set Up Voluum

Once you log into your Voluum account, what you want to do next is add specific information required to generate your tracking links.
The first information to add is the “Affiliate Networks”.
Just simply click on “Affiliate Networks” then click on “New Affiliate Nework”. You should see a page that looks like this…

[

Just simply add in the name of your affiliate network and tick on “Accept duplicate postbacks”. Just hover your mouse over the “?” to learn more about it. After that, just click on “Save”

The next step is to add in your “Traffic Source”.

Again, just click on “Traffic Sources” from the tab and then click on “New Traffic Source”. You should see a window that looks like this…
[Image: voluum-add-new-traffic-source.png]
Simply add in the name of the traffic source into the “Name section”, for example Plenty of Fish. You can leave the other two blank because we’ll be using the general post back URL from voluum to track our conversions.

Next, you want to click on “Advanced”

This is where you want to add in your parameters and place holders so you can track certain variables.
Since, the traffic source is Plenty of Fish, we can track the age, gender, state and creative ID.
After filling it in, it should look something like this…
[Image: tracking-parameters.png]
By adding in these placeholders and parameters, Voluum will automatically add them to your tracking link so you do not need to add them in manually.
This is of course if you choose “Plenty of Fish” as the traffic source when creating your campaigns (Will explain in a bit). Another thing to note is that each traffic sources have their own unique placeholders so you want to double check you’re using the same one.
For example, to track keywords from Bing PPC, you would want to use {querystring} instead of {creativids} (which belongs to POF).

Next we want to add a “New Offer”

Just simply click on “Offers” on the top tab then click on “New Offer” and a little window should appear.
Here is how I recommend you fill it in…

Name: Offer Name (Beyond Jobs (13497)
URL: http://trkur.com/XXXXX/YYYYY?s1={clickid...veryouwant. By placing in {clickid} and {campaign.id} into subIDs 1 and 2, it makes it really easy to double check conversions within your CPA networks.

Country: Pick the country you want to target for this offer. For example United States

Affiliate Network: Choose the affiliate network that the offer belongs to. If you have not added in the affiliate network in step1, you won’t be able to find it in the drop down so make sure you add it in first.

Payout: Since we’re going to be tracking our conversions with a Post Back URL, you can just leave it as “Auto”.
After that click on Save.
Just a quick recap, we have added in our affiliate network, our traffic source and our offer.
The last step is to “Create Our Campaign”.
Simply click on “campaigns” then click on “New Campaigns”. You should see something like this…
Here is how I recommend you fill it in…
Name: Offer + Country + CPA Network (Beyond Jobs (13497 US Peerfly)
Traffic Source: Choose Your Traffic Source (Plenty Of Fish)
Country: United States
Cost Model: Leave for now but once you have generated some traffic, you can go in here and edit it to CPC and just enter in your average Cost per click.
Redirect Mode: I normally just leave mine on 302 to make it easier. If you want to protect your campaigns from the CPA networks or other affiliates, feel free to choose meta refresh or double meta refresh.

Just keep in mind that they will deay your landing page so make sure you have very good load time.
Under “Advance” just click on “Direct Linking” then pick your offer. If you’re split testing, then you can simply just “Add Offer” but for now, just click on “Save”.
Your Campaign URL should have been generated and should look something like this…
http://XXXXXXX.voluumtrk.com/YYYYYYYYYYY...CreativeID:}
As you can see, the tracking link automatically adds in the placeholder required to track specific information.

Your Tracking Link is Complete – What Now?

What you want to do now is use this campaign link for your destination URL when setting up campaigns in Plenty of Fish.
Of course, if you chose a different traffic source with different placeholders, you would have to use those links for those traffic sources.
How it works is every time someone clicks on your add within Plenty Of Fish. They will be redirected to your campaign tracking link.
Information such as their age, their gender, their state and the creative ID will get passed through onto the URL and into our tracking tool (Voluum).
You can then use these data to help you optimize your campaigns after knowing which demographic has the highest ROI.

How To Tracking Your Conversions

The very last step is to track conversions. You will need to set it up a Post Back URL within your CPA network.
Since, this article is getting quite long. I have decided to write a new article where I walk you through “Tracking Conversions When Promoting CPA Offers
.
Make sure you read that article after setting everything up. It will make total sense and will tie up your campaign creation perfectly.
That’s prettCy much it and as always, feel free to leave a comment if you want to share your experience or ask any questions..C

The share is decent, but you should probably check for broken links or misleading information before just copy pasting the guides :)

Not to be rude or anything, but reading the guides and checking up on them before copy pasting would be a great idea. + Using the preview to make sure you're not just posting a large wall of text :)
Anyway, welcome to CPAelites. Seems like you're trying to share alot of good information, so you shall have a warm welcome from here.
Wish you best of luck.

I have to agree with this, it's fine to share guides and link back with credits (as you have), but please ensure you fix up broken text/links.
I worked on it a bit now and made it look better, I don't have time to embed all the images though. Nice to see you learning non incent though.

Good luck!
