Social Media Buttons hurt your conversion

Although you might not think so, social media buttons decrease your conversion rate. You can read the whole article in the link below.

The two main reasons for this are:
  • Negative social proof (often those buttons have a 0 on their counter, making it look uninteresting)
  • Distraction (the goal is to make the visitors click your call-to-action or download button, not the social media button)

So what you could do:
To fix the negative social proof you could consider buying likes and shares to get the counters to a higher number. Be careful though, you don't want to be caught with only Chinese or Turkish social shares. Get US or UK shares.

To fix the distraction. Hide social media buttons from your download page, or place them all the way at the bottom of your page. You could also make them appear after the user clicked the download button, so you have your main goal completed (the visitor clicks the download button) and then you can go for the secondary goal (the visitor social shares your page)

Thanks for the useful info Atlantis! I would like to add that anything that can take the visitor away from your landing page (YT videos, links, image links, social buttons, etc) should also be removed to increase conversion rate and decrease bounce rate.

That's pretty interesting- last thing I would expect but the distraction part of it kind of makes sense.

I think it probably depends on what you are using the social shares for too and what niche you're in.

I'd go for increasing social proof by getting likes,shares,tweets etc instead of removing the social buttons.

Social proof does wonders to conversions. Just not let them see ''0 people have liked this''. That is a suicidal approach.
