Police shoot Abandoned Dog

The elderly German Shepherd-type canine was discovered tied to the post in Mainsforth Terrace, Hartlepool, yesterday morning.

Officers launched an urgent search for the animal’s owner or anyone who may have known who it belonged to, Gazette Live reports.

They worked with agencies including the RSPCA and numerous veterinary professionals in a bid to calm the aggressive dog.

However, despite the joint effort and bystanders reportedly begging for the animal to be saved, the decision was made to destroy it.

Cleveland Police said the difficult decision had not been taken lightly and was the very last course of action that we wanted to take.

A police spokesperson said All attempts to calm the dog failed.

Vets advised that they were unable to sedate the dog due to not being able to approach it and not having equipment to sedate from a distance.

Unfortunately, veterinary professionals advised that the dog could not be re-homed due to its aggressive behaviour.

The decision taken, in conjunction with the RSPCA and veterinary professionals, was that the kindest thing to do for the dog would be to destroy it. This has been a difficult decision and one that we had hoped we wouldn’t have to make.

In a statement on Facebook, the force said police received a call from Hartlepool Borough Council at 10.07am yesterday, regarding what was described as an aggressive German Shepherd which had been left tied to a telegraph pole.

Despite hours of working together with partner agencies including the RSPCA, a re-homing charity and consultation with numerous veterinary professionals in order to calm the dog, the difficult decision was made to destroy it, it said.

The dog became increasingly aggressive as time went on. Attempts were made to find the owner, however, they were unsuccessful.

The decision to shoot the dog sparked outrage among some Facebook users, with one claiming it was the easy option out.

Another user questioned If the dog was tethered why did they need to sedate from a distance anyway?

And a third commented I bet the poor dog was terrified tied to a tree with people all round him of course he was gona act aggressively (sic).

However, a fourth user hit out at the person who left the dog tied to the pole, saying The blame ends there. If she wasn’t abandoned in this way there wouldn’t have been these consequences.

Hundreds of comments have also been left on Dog Theft Awareness North East UK, where the incident was first reported.

Some locals described how they were pleading with police and the RSPCA to save the terrified animal.

One user wrote earlier Why don’t they tranquillise the dog and get him somewhere safe, I hope they don’t kill it.

A second added Can’t someone help it before they destroy it.

I’m the other end of the country, surely there is someone close, poor, poor dog, terrified, cold and abandoned.

It's sad, but the blame lies with whomever left it there.
