Hi all,

A beginner here in programming, looking to get started. What's the most valuable and sought after programming language right now and what languages would you recommend as a basis to start learning?

If you are more into web/windows app design, then I suggest you learn basic C or C++ initially to get hang with the programming style. However, you can also learn C# which is a great .NET language that will assist you greatly in making good apps for yourself or for someone else. Python is also a good choice. C++ and Java are two of the most demanding languages for job purpose. However, if you are more into web designing, I will suggest you to learn HTML/CSS/JavaScript/PHP.

P.S. Please don't start with VB.NET. You will have a hard time moving in core C language style languages later on if you get habituated to VB.NET's syntax.

Generally speaking, Java and PHP currently have the most availability of jobs, but it's all up to what you're interested in developing. If you're looking at systems programming, go with C. If you're looking at android application development, go with Java. If you're looking at Web programming, go with JavaScript and PHP.

From my experience, start with C. It's procedural and once you get a good grasp of it, you can move on to other paradigms like OOP. C will take you years to master, just keep that in mind. It's a pretty nice language.

I wish I would have started with C# years ago, instead of VB.Net...
With C# you learn how to make better code, it also got similar syntax with PHP, Javascript & jQuery which will totally help u with web development also!

If your planning to make your living with coding, there is always demand for C#, PHP, C++ and Java coders :)

A look at the Tiobe index might help: http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/p...index.html

I started with VBA (MS-Office script language) over a decade ago, went on to VB 6 and then .net. I found VB an easy syntax and it was a nice time I had with this language. I didn't used VB for years because my personal preferences changed so I moved on to other languages, but that's another story. Anyway, it is hard to say what the "most valuable language" is for several reasons, it also depends on what do you want to achieve. Do you want to make some desktop app, web app, smartphone app etc.? Do you want to learn it for a profession? Or do you just want to learn some coding language just for fun?

I would recommend you to start either with Java or C++, for web PHP or Ruby, but the choice is yours. Once mastered one language, you will be able to learn other languages easier.
