Well, you've seen the two words together. Anime and Manga. Anime often pronounced as (Ani-may) and is called Anime even when in plural form, defined by the Oxford dictionary as:

Noun
Japanese movie and television animation, often having a science fiction theme and sometimes including violent or explicitly sexual material.

Basically, in my own words, it is Japanese art in video form. And it is used to portray anything from life values to entertainment only. Here is an example of Anime:

You already know different movies, and music even artworks have categories called Genres. Here are some Anime with some different genres and sub-genres

Mecha
In Japan, "robot anime" (known as "mecha anime" outside Japan) is a genre that features the machines as the central plot points. Here, the average robot mechs are usually fourteen feet (4.3 m) tall at the smallest, outfitted with a wide variety of weapons, and quite frequently have tie-ins with toy manufacturers. However, the robots can get up to 500 m tall (as in Bokurano). The Gundam franchise is a prominent example: Gundam toys and model kits (produced by the Japanese toymaker Bandai) are ubiquitous in Japan.

The size of mechs can vary according to the story and concepts involved. Some of them may be little more than mechanized body armor, while others may not be considerably taller than a tank (Armored Trooper Votoms, Megazone 23, Code Geass); some may be a few stories tall and others can be as tall as a skyscraper. There are also mechs which are big enough to contain the population of an entire city, some the size of a planet and some the size of a large galaxy. Some are even implied to be able to be as large as the universe (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Lagann-hen). And then there are some that are so big the universe they are in collapses and they fight in the space outside.

Even though he repeatedly questions why he has accepted this mission from his estranged and cold father, his doing so helps him to gradually accept himself. However, why exactly are the angels attacking and what are his father’s true intentions are yet to be unraveled.

Years later, Lelouch is in high school, but regularly skips out of school to go play chess and gamble on himself. One day, he stumbles on terrorists 11's who've stolen a military secret and is caught by a member of the Britannian task force sent after them, who is Suzaku. As the rest of the squad arrives, Suzaku is shot for disobeying orders, while the military secret, a young girl, gives Lelouch the power of Geass, which makes anyone obey any order. While Suzaku is secretly made the pilot of Britannia's brand new prototype Knightmare, Lancelot, Lelouch becomes the masked Zero to lead the rebellion to destroy Britannia once and for all.

Harem
Harem, broadly speaking, is a loose subgenre of anime and manga characterized by a protagonist surrounded, usually amorously, by three or more members of the opposite sex. The most common and practically tantamount scenario is a male surrounded by a group of females; when this is reversed it is informally referred to as a reverse harem gyakuharemu More recent variants include removing the protagonist's opposing sex to allow for yuri harems and yaoi harems (as with Gakuen Heaven). The term is derived from the Arabic "harem", originally defined as a private sanctum for women where men were forbidden but, modernly defined outside its original meaning as "a group of women associated in any way with one man or household"

With these three girls vying for his affections, the boy finds that his new life filled with despair, jealousy, and just a little hope is beginning.

Hentai
Hentai that features mainly heterosexual interactions occur in both male-targeted (ero) and female-targeted ("ladies' comics") form. Those that feature mainly homosexual interactions are known as yaoi (male-male) and yuri (female-female). Both yaoi and, to a lesser extent, yuri are generally aimed at members of the opposite sex from the persons depicted.

Yaoi commonly features males of ambiguous gender—in both physical appearance and, frequently, mannerism—called bishonen, literally "beautiful boy". Some feature biseinen ("beautiful man"), males of more adult or masculine appearance than bishonen. Less common are bara—larger, often heavily muscled and sometimes hairy males, the yaoi counterpart of the "bear" in gay pornography—as well as oyaji (meaning "daddy" or "uncle"), featuring middle-aged and elderly men; these types are mainly found in material aimed at gay men, which may be called bara or 'men's love' (ML), and is considered to be distinct from yaoi. Yaoi also extends beyond the hentai genre, since it applies to any anime/manga material that includes male homosexuality, except for that actually aimed at a gay male audience. In Western usage, yaoi is distinguished from shonen-ai (literally, "boy-love"), in which two males merely express romantic feelings for each other without actually having sexual relations; however in current Japanese usage this term most commonly refers to pornographic shotacon for men. Women interested in Yaoi are called "Fujoshi", a pun which translate loosely as "rotten girl" or "rotten woman".

Yuri is very similar to yaoi, except that the focus is on female homosexual interactions. The characters in yuri are typically "bishojo", meaning "beautiful girl" (this term is not specific to yuri but is applied generally to depictions of attractive women for a male audience; for example, in the term "bishojo game"). Shojo-ai ("girl love") is a western term for the female equivalent of shonen-ai; in Japan these works are also called yuri. Yuri may be aimed at (presumptively heterosexual) male, heterosexual female, or lesbian female audiences.

Seinen
Seinen manga is a subset of manga that is generally targeted at a 20–30 year old male audience, but the audience can be older with some manga aimed at businessmen well into their 40s. In Japanese, the word Seinen means "young man" or "young men" and is not suggestive of sexual matters. (The female equivalent to seinen manga is josei manga.)

It has a wide variety of art styles and more variation in subject matter, ranging from the avant-garde to the pornographic. Seinen manga is distinguished from shonen, or boys' manga, by having a stronger emphasis on realism. Because of the emphasis on storyline and character development instead of action, some seinen series are often confused with shojo, or girls' manga. This is especially true of seinen comedy series such as Chobits, and Chi's Sweet Home, or seinen drama such as Twin Spica. Other examples of seinen manga include: Gantz, Battle Royale, 20th Century Boys, Monster, Blame!, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Berserk, Battle Angel Alita, Hellsing, Drifters, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Elfen Lied. Rumiko Takahashi's Maison Ikkoku is sometimes classified as seinen, although this is disputed by some fans.

Shonen
Shonen is the word used to describe anime that specifically appeals to young boys. The magazine Shonen Jump for example is packed full of manga like Dragonball, Naruto, and Kenshin. The shows are often action oriented only and use romance only as a comedic tool or for mild crossover appeal. These were the first major entries in the US market and therefore still colour the perspective of many US viewers as the prototypical anime. There are the occasional Shonen romances though, usually taking the guys perspective and making light of the process, but they're rarer than the butt whooping in the former shows listed. Manga
Next thing on this topic is Manga. Manga is very similar to Anime, but the only difference is, Manga is comic-like. It's read from a book, except it is read from the back to front. Not the other way around! That's how the Japanese read.

Basically, Manga is the longer version of an Anime, plus Manga give more detailed storyline as well. Usually Anime is made from the storyline of a Manga, but there are times where it's made purely Anime only.
