How to Optimize a Blog Post
Understanding how to optimize a blog post for SEO is one of the most critical skills that a blogger must have. And just to be clear, you don’t have to be some nerdy SEO guru to be successful at this.

Simply follow the steps below and it will become like second nature whenever you are going to publish a new post.

10 Steps to Optimizing a Blog Post
Optimizing a blog post is not complex by any means.

The number one thing you must focus on is keyword placement.

Forget any of the junk you have heard about keyword density. Just write naturally and don’t focus on how many keywords you have in your copy. But at the same time, don’t be silly and think you can stuff keywords or you will receive a complimentary round house kick from Google.

An example of keyword stuffing or TOO MUCH keyword density would be: “SEO is great for all websites who need SEO. Without SEO, your site will suffer. You need to improve your SEO so that… SEO and SEO with some more SEO…..”

Okay, that was a really extreme example, but you get the point.

Keyword Placement

The first step to proper keyword placement is HAVING a keyword to place.

You should be writing blog posts related to your sites primary keyword. Not all the time, but a lot of the time.

If your website is about mixed martial arts, then writing a post about Anderson Silva or the UFC would be a great start. In fact, “Anderson Silva” is going to be my sample keyword for this entire post. If you don’t know who he is, he is pretty much the best MMA fighter on the planet.

ANYWAY….so now we have our keyword.

Step 1: The Title

Placing your keyword in the title is one of the most crucial on-page factors, but you should try to incorporate it in a natural way.

Check out Copy Blogger to learn how to write headlines more effectively.

Some examples of properly optimized titles:

Anderson Silva is the Best Fighter on the Planet
Will Anderson Silva EVER Lose?
10 Reasons Why Anderson Silva Will NEVER Lose
If you haven’t already, you should download the All in One SEO Pack plugin. It’s free and very easy to use. It allows you to write your meta descriptions for the search engines.

Step 2: URL Structure

There is a lot of debate about what URL structure is best for SEO, but I have personally had the most success with shorter URLs.

If our post title is “Anderson Silva is the Best Fighter on the Planet”, then our URL should include the important keywords and cut out the irrelevant words.

Here’s how I would structure the URL: http://www.andersonsilva.com/anderson-si...t-fighter/

This provides you with a keyword-rich URL and it is also much easier to remember from a usability standpoint.

Step 3: First sentence

Having your keyword near the beginning of your copy is a great way to set the tone for your readers and the search engines.

Intro sentence: “If you didn’t know, Anderson Silva is simply the BEST fighter on the planet.”

Step 4: Header Tags

Header tags are not only a great spot to place your target keywords, but are necessary for breaking up your content and making it more digestible for your readers.

I recommend placing your target keyword in your first Header tag, and then placing LSI keywords in the H2 or H3 tags when it makes sense to do so. The first Header tag is the most important spot, but always focus on readability.

DO NOT include your keyword in every single header tag.

Header tag format:
H1: Anderson Silva is the Best Fighter on the Planet
H2: 10 Obvious Reasons Why Anderson Silva is the Best Fighter
H3: Can GSP Beat Silva?

Step 5: Last Sentence

There isn’t a significant amount of evidence that this is completely necessary, but I think it really helps solidify the keyword relevance of any article. Just conclude your article by mentioned the keyword one more time.

Step 6: Internals Links

Internal linking will help Google crawl through your site and discover unindexed pages more effectively. Also, proper internal linking will also send your readers deeper into your site, which will subsequently decrease bounce rate.

Internal linking with exact match anchor text is acceptable, but it definitely doesn’t hurt to mix it up.

Step 7: External Links

Most website owners skip on this step because they are soooo concerned about losing their precious link juice. The truth is, linking to authority or relevant sites builds relationships and TRUST in the eyes of Google.

It’s unnatural to NEVER link out, and it honestly makes you look like a jerk.

So from an SEO and non-jerk standpoint, you should link out when you can.

This doesn’t mean you should link out every single post, but try to do it when it makes sense.

Step 8: Images

Google gives more weight to pages that include pictures. Plain and simple.

But you want to make sure that you properly optimize any picture you include in your posts.

How to optimize an image:
URL – change your url to match your target keyword
Alt Tag – change your alt tag to your target keyword

* ALWAYS do this for your first image on any page. If you’re using multiple images in one post, DO NOT place your primary keyword in those.

If you don’t feel like making alt tags for every image, then you should download this free plugin: SEO Friendly Images. It will automatically create your alt tag to match the title of your blog post (which should include your keyword).

Step 9: Videos (Optional, but Recommended)

To really make Google love your posts you can include a relevant video. This isn’t completely necessary, but there is evidence that Google gives more weight to posts that include videos.

Your readers will also appreciate it so that they don’t have to constantly read blocks of text.

Step 10: Meta Tags

Now that you have downloaded the All in One SEO Pack, you will need to insert your meta title, description, and keywords. Meta tags have no effect on rankings aside from the title, but are essential for click-through rates.

Write an appealing headline and description to ensure your page gets clicked on after you achieve your rankings!

Bonus Trick: Bolding

Believe it or not, using <strong></strong> tags on your primary keyword for the page can actually increase relevancy and rankings. The trick is to only use these tags once throughout your copy and to use them on the keyword only. By doing so, it’s telling Google “HEY, this keyword is super important!”.

Just remember, it’s only going to have a strong (no pun intended) effect if only use the tags once. If you want to bold other words or phrases throughout the article, just use the <b></b> tags.

Finals Thoughts About Optimizing Your Pages

After awhile, all of these steps should become second nature to you, but you can bookmark this post until then =)

Basic, but useful info. Bolding is no longer important, it was abused to death. The page title, headlines, headings and URL structure are the most important parts. There's a black hat blog I subscribe to where the guy took a page with little content and ranked it purely based on those, he bought a boat load of backlinks that weren't targeted (anchor was click here, visit, etc.) and he ranked #1 for a competitive MMA term.

SEO is not the same for everyone, maybe one thing worked for him and it doesn't for me :)
