Quote:On Thursday, Facebook went down and sent our a message stating “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can. Go Back.” But clicking on ‘Go back’ also does not take you back to the Facebook universe. However, it was soon fixed by the company.

While Facebook apologized for the outage without stating any concrete reasons for the glitch, many of us are wondering about the ad revenue losses the company may have suffered due to the outage. A Forbes report now suggests that the losses incurred by the social network for the half an hour outage could amount to only $500,000 that translates to a little over 3 crores.

This calculation is based on Facebook Q1 revenue which amounts to $2.5 billion and approximately $1.6 an hour. This means around half a million for half an hour, adds the report. Facebook has already spent over $20 billion on acquisitions including the whopping $19 billion spent on WhatsApp, clearly hinting that half a million is a paltry sum.

The New York Times points out that it is the longest outage the company has faced ever since 2010. The outage had then lasted for around 2.5 hours and the company had disclosed it was due to some mishandling of an error condition.

The Facebook outage also led to people taking to Twitter to poke fun at the social site. Along with ‘made-up’ panicky messages, sarcasm and jokes when Facebook went down, it was even funnier once Facebook was back. Some even showed their social media marketing skills by inviting people to join their services while Facebook is down.
