Do you Need Motivation to Succeed?

Have a good head
“I'm passionate about drinking beer, but that's not a good basis for starting a brewery,”

Being passionate about solving world hunger, for example, doesn’t mean you should throw in the towel and start canvassing on a daily basis. But, you can do something about this on the side, for example, raise awareness or donate to charity.
Running a successful project is about something more than just passion.

“Having a passion for something helps but what you also need is a good head for business, funding, an escape plan, something to sell and a means of making a profit,”

Drop the theatricals
“People that tell me they have a passion for accountancy or business development worry me,”

Instead of having a ‘passion’ for something, perhaps you’re simply talented or interested in it. A good novelist doesn’t always spend their entire life dedicated to writing, for example.
Bestselling author Haruki Murakami previously was a small business owner himself, running a bar and not penning his first piece of fiction until the age of 29. But that doesn’t mean he was unsuccessful; he made a living and provided for himself and his wife before discovering his talent and blossoming it.

“Save you passion for you girlfriend, business is about hard work, persistence, objective decision making, knowledge and ability. Having an interest in business generally is fine, it means that you may be able to spot an opportunity in any area, rather than being confined to the single area where you have this subjective 'passion' nonsense,”

Motivation > passion
Rather than figuring out what your passion is, why not opt to figure out what motivates you to go to work or get up every day? This is something you’ll need to get you through the first tough days and weeks of starting up.

“The most successful businesspeople out there simply apply a lot of hard work and push through anything which may hold them back. It's certainly possible to start a successful business without any passion or interest in an industry at all. However, it is more difficult, as you're then battling with your own bouts of boredom, procrastination and lack of motivation,”

While it’s not the be all and end all to be passionate about what you do, it does help considerably if you are motivated and interested in your business and day-to-day life.

“Doing long days with almost no initial reward is just easier if it's something you enjoy doing, so in many ways it's an intelligent business decision if you avoid taking a path which makes day-to-day work harder and more gruelling for yourself,”

Finally - don’t be afraid to try things out
At the end of the day, if you don’t know what your passion is or what motivates you, then don’t be afraid to try various ways of working it out. Just don’t invest loads of capital, time and energy into something until you’re sure you’ve found the style of working that’s right for you.

Whether you call that passion or merely doing something you’re interested in and good at, is up to you.

Hopefully this gives you another way of looking at things and understand your ways of knowing what motivates you.
