This depends on the forum software used and the individual settings of the forum (follow, nofollow). And if the forum is known for selling links or spam issues, then the backlink has no worth and could be dangerous (in the worst case).

This is considered VERY low quality now-a-days. Google also has gotten smarter and can detect easily if it is a forum or a profile link. I won't recommend at all if you want to keep your site alive for a longer time.

Hope that helps!

It works an an extent really. If you get a few links out of it but if you stay on the forum and publish threads/posts, you will gain too many backlinks with the same anchor text. Not good.

It can help, but make sure that those forums are related to your niche else i don't recommend it.

Fine. But be aware that forum links (no matter if they are set at the profile or in your signature) don't have the same impact like HQ links.
